Dutch version of The Crown sees wider release

Máxima, a 2024 Dutch television series covering Queen Máxima’s early life and relationship with King Willem-Alexander, is going to be airing across the world ahead of further episodes. It is considered by many to be the Netherlands answer to The Crown.

Máxima premiered in April 2024 in the Netherlands and is a six-episode series exploring the life of Máxima Zorreguieta in her 20s when she met the then-Prince of Orange, Willem-Alexander. It shows much of her childhood and teen years in Argentina, in addition to meeting the Dutch prince in Spain in 1999.

While the show aired in Spain in June 2024 and then in August in Latin America, producers will be happy to see that further global distribution deals are in the works. There are now deals in place for Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and possibly more countries in central Europe.

Máxima has already been renewed for a second season, following the queen as she prepares for her 2004 wedding to Willem-Alexander and through to 2013 when they her husband ascended the Dutch throne. Filming will begin before the end of 2024.

The show was met with mixed critical reviews, with some praising the performances while others thought the show lacked depth.
