Queen Margrethe of Denmark has stayed busy after her January 2024 abdication, carrying out regular engagements. Her love and support of the arts continues and she’s been able to enjoy her own creations alongside her sister, Princess Benedikte.
Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte visited the Pantomime Theatre in Tivoli to see two ballets, Klods-Hans and Cinderella.
Before the performance even began, the former Danish monarch’s work was on display. Last year, Margrethe designed a new curtain for the outdoor theatre. The curtain, designed for the theatre’s 150th anniversary, is a vibrant peacock design with blues, purples, and greens.
While Queen Margrethe has long been a fan of ballet and the performing arts in general, these two productions are particularly special for her.
The two ballets have been reinterpreted for these new productions. Queen Margrethe actually designed both the sets and costumes for Klods-Hans and Cinderella.
Originally founded in 1843, the first ballet was performed at the outdoor garden in Copenhagen in 1911. Her Majesty first worked with the company in 2001 when she designed the sets for “Love in the Dustbin”.
She has continued to work with the theatre over the years, designing the sets and costumes for The Snow Queen in 2019.
