The Danish royals have shared a new video of Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary jogging through the grounds of Fredensborg Castle. The short clip is special wasn’t shot by a professional, but by their 10-year-old son, Prince Vincent.
The video’s caption reveals that the Frederik and Mary were running as part of their training for the annual Royal Run, which is slated to take place on September 12, 2021 after being postponed from its original May date. Crown Prince Frederik, a keen sportsman and marathon runner, established the Royal Run in 2018 as part of his fiftieth birthday celebrations.
Royal Run is unique in that it is not a traditional “race” with the emphasis placed on finishing first. Instead, the event allows for both walking and running, and provides alternate mileages so that families with young children can also take part. The Royal Run also distinguishes itself from other running events by taking place among Denmark’s five biggest cities- Aalborg, Aarhus, Esbjerg, Odense and Copenhagen – rather than in one central location.
The event has taken place annually since its inception, with the notable exception of 2020 due to the global health crisis. Through the years, over 70,000 Danish citizens have participated in the Royal Run, which is coordinated by the “Exercise for Life” organization, the Sports Confederation of Denmark and the Danish Athletics Federation.
In February 2021, when the Danish court announced the postponement of the 2021 race via Instagram, it was accompanied by a video of Prince Vincent and his twin sister Josephine out for a run with their father. Perhaps this means we will see the entire Danish Crown Prince family participate in this year’s much-anticipated event.
