Denmark’s Queen Margrethe is back in hospital after developing a blood clot.
The Danish queen was admitted to Copenhagen’s Rigshosptalet after a CT scan showed a large amount of blood around her hip. It’s believed she had previously had a fall.
Doctors admitted the 86 year old to hospital and she is now undergoing treatment. Her daughter in law, Queen Mary, later confirmed that the care plan involved surgery which was now complete.
A brief statement from the Royal Court in Denmark said that Margrethe was doing ”well under the circumstances.”
Just days earlier, the queen had been released from hospital after a brief stay to treat heart problems.
On May 14, Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet with heart cramps, or angina. A day later she underwent angioplasty and was kept in until May 19 when she returned to her home at Fredensborg. It was announced that she would undergo a period of recuperation and her forthcoming engagements were cancelled.
However, on the afternoon of May 25 it was confirmed that she was back in hospital after the blood clot was seen near her hip during the CT scan.
It’s not known how long Queen Margrethe will have to stay in hospital for this latest condition.
The news of her illness came as Queen Mary and King Frederik, along with their four children, took part in this year’s Royal Run. King Frederik set up the event several years ago and now tens of thousands of people take to the streets, fields and forests around Denmark to take part in running races.
As she finished her own stint in the Royal Run, Queen Mary spoke to TV reporters about Queen Margrethe, confirming that her mother in law had undergone an operation and adding that all was going well.
Queen Mary also said that ”of course, it had put a dampener on the day” before adding that Queen Margrethe wouldn’t be happy with her saying that.
Queen Margrethe reigned in Denmark for 52 years, taking the throne on January 14 1972 and abdicating in favour of Frederik on January 14 2024.
