Speaking in the August issue of British Vogue, Oprah Winfrey has revealed that she’s still savouring all the great memories from attending the royal wedding at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle back in May. Winfrey said that the wedding “left me feeling that anything is possible through the power of love,” adding “Reverend Curry was right!”
Bishop Michael Curry spoke passionately in his sermon during the wedding ceremony just before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex exchanged vows. He quoted Martin Luther King Jr. when he said: “We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way.”
Winfrey said of the sermon: “It was a cultural moment and you could not be there or watching on television… and not feel that there was a shift that just happened in the middle of it.”
Winfrey was one of the 600 guests invited to join the couple inside the chapel and shared on social media that she suffered a wardrobe near disaster in the hours before the wedding when she realised her original dress looked too white in photographs. She told British Vogue that “In the picture, the dress looked white, not cream. I googled, ‘Can you wear white to a wedding? Answer ‘No don’t risk it”.
Winfrey quickly reached out to designer Stella McCartney – who had designed the dress – and McCartney’s team leapt into action to craft a pink replacement dress overnight. She later thanked the team for their efforts saying: “I would like to thank the Stella McCartney team for working all night long to get this dress finished because we had dressgate. Wrong colour…now we got the right colour. I think we’re going to do okay.”
Winfrey has previously said that Harry and Meghan’s big day was “more than a wedding” adding, “I think it’s bigger than them and I think it bodes well for hope for all of us.”
