The Mountbattern Festival of Music features the Massed Bands of Her
Majesty’s Royal Marines performing over three nights in London’s
Royal Albert Hall.
Prince Phillip will be attending the event as Captain General of
the Royal Marines. His Royal Highness was previously a member of
the Navy until 1951 when he ended his active naval career.
In 1952, he was appointed Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps,
Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Cadet Force and Air Commodore-in-Chief
of the Air Training Corps.
Eventually the Prince was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet and
appointed Field Marshal as well as Marshal of the Royal Air
Force.
The festival began on the 6th February 1973 when the bands of the
Royal Marines School of Music, Commander-in-Chief, Naval Home
Command and HMS Ganges were massed for a performance given in aid
of the Royal Academy of Music’s 150th Anniversary Appeal.
All proceeds from the festival go to the Royal Marines Charitable
Trust Fund and CLIC Sargent.
