The Countess of Wessex is Patron of Tomorrow’s People, a national
employment charity which has programmes throughout the country to
give people the help and support that they require to find
employment.
Working with the aim to avoid long-term un-employment and eventual
homelessness, the organisation recently launched the Opportunity
Partnership, to help get work for 25,000 young people. This year,
the charity is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The Countess met the stars of ITV’s popular British
period drama, including Jim Carter (Mr. Carson), Laura Carmichael
(Lady Edith Crawley), Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley) and Allen
Leech (Tom Branson). She was also introduced to Julian Fellowes,
the writer of the series, and mingled freely with the actors and
other guests.
The Downton Abbey cast gave a seasonal reading, before answering
their fans’ questions about life on the show. Following the
audience participation segment of the evening, those in attendance
enjoyed a performance by The Salvation Army.
Later, Sophie joined Mr. Carter on stage to help him call out the
winners of the raffle prize, and the guests were treated to a glass
of wine and mince pies, before the event was brought to a
close.
