Emperor of Japan to make poignant tribute on long awaited State Visit

The Emperor of Japan will end his State Visit to the UK with a poignant tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

As the three day trip by Emperor Naruhito comes to an end, on June 27th 2024, he will travel to St. George’s Chapel where he will lay a wreath on Her Late Majesty’s tomb.

The Empress of Japan will accompany him on this private visit to the Chapel.

The moving moment will conclude a three day State Visit which will see the Emperor and Empress hosted at Buckingham Palace by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The visit will include a carriage procession along the Mall as well as a glittering State Banquet.

However, political meetings will not take place during the event. Usually, incoming Heads of State would meet the Prime Minister and attend the Houses of Parliament. The decision of Rishi Sunak to call a general election means these will be dropped from the programme.

There had been some debate about whether the State Visit could go ahead given the election campaign but the decision to remove political involvement has ensured it can proceed.

The Emperor and Empress of Japan will attend Westminster Abbey during their Visit where they will lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.

The State Visit runs from June 25th to June 27th 2024.
