Tennis star stops action on Centre Court to pay tribute to King of Spain

King Felipe of Spain on Centre Court at Wimbledon for the Men's Singles Final

Top tennis star, Carlos Alcarez, stopped Centre Court in its tracks to pay tribute to King Felipe of Spain.

Alcarez, who was runner up in 2025 after losing in four sets to Jannik Sinner, asked for extra time in his post match interview to mention the Spanish monarch.

The second seed had already spoke warmly of his opponent, Jannik Sinner, and thanked the crowd for their support through the two week tournament.

Annabel Croft, who led the presentation ceremony, had already got the crowd on their feet as she concluded their interview when Alcarez asked to say one more thing.

Looking to the royal box, he paid a fulsome tribute to King Felipe who had flown in from Spain to see him play in his third consecutive Wimbledon final.

The Spanish star said it was an honour and expressed his gratitude for the royal support. As he left a few minutes later, he gave another wave and nod to Spain’s monarch.

King Felipe had sat alongside the Prince of Wales during the three hour match. Prince William accompanied his wife, the Princess of Wales, who presented the trophies.

The Princess also received a tribute from Carlos Alcarez who stopped several feet from her when called up to receive his runner’s up prize before making a deep bow towards her.

Jannik Sinner also bowed to Kate as he made his way forward to pick up the famous trophy. It was a moment of tennis history as he is the first Italian to ever win a Singles title at Wimbledon.

The Princess late spent several minutes on court speaking to the ball boys and ball girls to thank them for their work during the tournament.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte accompanied their parents to the final and were seen chatting to King Felipe ahead of the match.

George, who turns 12 in a few days’ time, also revealed that he’s developed a real liking for tennis. As he spoke to Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool, the first all British duo to win the Men’s Doubles since 1936, he said he was ‘alright’ at the sport.
