The Grand Duke of Luxembourg has marked the 20th anniversary of his accession with a heartfelt message to his fellow citizens. And Henri, who became his country’s ruler on October 7th 2000, was also feted by people from across Luxembourg in a special video where they shared their thoughts on his two decades in charge.

Among the wellwishes to the Grand Duke in the montage were celebrations of his achievements and praise for his twenty year rule. Many people also wished him good health and many more years at the helm of the Grand Duchy.

In response, Grand Duke Henri thanked all of those who wished him and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa so well on this special anniversary. He added ”I am proud to be your Head of State.”

It’s a role he intends to keep on with as the anniversary was also marked by an interview with Luxemburger Wort newspaper in which he dismissed rumours of a possible abdication.

As the anniversary got under way, the Grand Duke and Duchess shared a short but heartfelt message on their official Twitter account in which they again expressed their gratitude for all the support shown to them.

Henri became Grand Duke of Luxembourg on the abdication of his father, Jean, on October 7th 2000 and has now ruled for two decades. His time as Grand Duke has been marked by his popularity but also with controversy, particularly over the Waringo report which found a ‘culture of fear’ at the Grand Ducal Court and which led to a reorganisation.
