Queen Mary gives a pure mum reaction to Princess Isabella’s controversial T-shirt

King Frederik and Queen Mary smile as they are asked about their daughter

Queen Mary of Denmark did what all mums do when asked about their children doing something they might regret – she sighed and gave an exasperated laugh.

It was a pure mum reaction and got plenty of smiles, not least from her husband, King Frederik, who did what all dads do in that situation and hoped his other half would sort it out.

The response came when a journalist asked the King and Queen of Denmark about the decision of their daughter, Princess Isabella, to wear a T-shirt to a rock festival that was emblazoned with a swear word. As the 18 year old and her friends headed to Smukfest, Isabella chose a top that carried the slogan ****ed him yesterday – a reference to a song by a band she was seeing. One of the best known tracks by Suspekt has a similar title.

As Queen Mary came to the end of a four day summer tour around Denmark, she and King Frederik took questions from TV channel, TV2. Billed-Bladet shared their video of the exchange in which a reporter asked what the couple thought of the row around Isabella’s T-shirt.

After sighing and laughing, Queen Mary made a very sweet gesture to her daughter. She said her first thought had been ”is she completely gone?”. Isabella famously said exactly the same words to her mum during a row at a photocall a few years ago. The princess, then 14, didn’t realise she could be heard by reporters as she argued about where she should be standing and asked her mum ”are you completely gone?”

Queen Mary went on to explain about the T-shirt that ”some decisions are better than others”.

It was a very diplomatic response that recognised the row but also supported her daughter. The 18 year old wasn’t the only one in such a top but she was the only teenager at Smukfest who is also second in line to the throne of Denmark.

The comments came at the end of a successful four day trip around Denmark for King Frederik and Queen Mary who have been greeted by big crowds at every stop.

The focus of their visit has been on local economies and on environmental sustainability. There have also been some glittering gala events at the end of each stop.

They now return to Copenhagen where a new round of royal engagements gets under way while Isabella returns to school for her final year of secondary education.
