Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor formally surrenders lease of Royal Lodge and settles £1.8 million bill

Prince Andrew, Duke of York

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor paid £1.8 million for repairs to Royal Lodge before formally surrendering his lease on the property.

The former prince had lived at the 30 room house on the Windsor estate from 2002 until leaving in January this year. He agreed to give up the property in October 2025 after further revelations about his friendship with convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

Now, it’s been revealed that the formal lease of the property has taken place and the final repair bill has been settled. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor originally took the property on a seventy five year lease.

Much of the £1.8 million that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor paid was to restore an outbuilding that was in poor repair. Updates to the house and its gardens were also required before his tenure officially ceasesd.

However, he, in turned received just over £300,000 in compensation for leaving the property earlier than the original terms of his lease.

Since leaving Royal Lodge, where he lived with his former wife Sarah Ferguson, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor has moved to the Sandringham estate in Norfolk where he now lives at Marsh Farm. Sandringham is the private property of the Monarch while Windsor is part of the Crown Estate.

The vacation of Royal Lodge came at the same time as King Charles stripped his brother of his HRH and Prince titles and asked the Lord Chancellor to remove Andrew’s dukedom and other titles from the Roll of Peerage. Since then, the eighth in line to the throne has been known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

In February, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested at his new home at Sandringham while police searched the property and Royal Lodge. It’s now been revealed that the former prince launched a successful legal challenge against the way the warrants were obtained. Thames Valley Police, who carried out the raids on his homes, conceded that the search warrants had been unlawful as they were issued under the wrong section of the law.

Officers have been allowed to keep the material they took at the time as investigations continue. Andrew Mountbatten Windsor was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and released without charge but under investigation.

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor withdrew from public life in 2019 after details of his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein continued and following a disastrous TV interview in which the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip tried to defend himself.

He is now rarely seen in public and will not attend any publicnfamily events.
