Queen Mary follows in the footsteps of several Danish queens

Queen Mary of Denmark has visited one of her newest patronages for the first time since inheriting her role from Queen Margrethe. 

On Monday, Queen Mary visited Diakonissestiftelsen, a welfare organisation that helps to provide care for those at all stages of life, as well as training in healthcare. 

The new Danish Queen inherited this patronage from Queen Margrethe in 2024 following her January abdication (in addition to the Danish Cancer Society and the Royal Danish Academy of Music). 

Mary looked excited to be visiting the Copenhagen-based organisation, happily greeting the crowd waiting outside before heading inside for a tour of the facilities. 

Her Majesty was able to spend time speaking with two residents in the Momentet program, a social psychiatric residence for young adults. The program provides them stability and education to prepare for their future goals. 

Queen Mary shared how impressed she was with the organisation, saying ”today I visited the foundation to experience first-hand its important work in education, health and psychiatry. I was impressed by how the foundation builds a bridge between tradition and innovation and, on that basis, contributes solutions that focus on the whole person.”

Diakonissestiftelsen was originally founded by the then-Crown Princess Louise in 1866. After having research done in both Sweden and Germany to look into the deaconesses’s order, the future Queen Louise helped to fund the organisation. 

The deaconesses now provide education in addition to care for the elderly, including some degrees: Nursing, Christianity, Culture, and Communication, and Social and Health Care Education. 

Queen Mary chose a black suit for the day and paired it with a striking red Isabel Marant blouse with ruffle details on the high neck and sleeves.
