Princess Margaret's jewels fetch hefty sum at auction

The late Princess Margaret’s jewels went under the hammer at a recent auction at Bonhams, London, fetching over £40,000.ThePrincessMargaret
The first item was an enamel and gem-set tiger bangle and ring suite, dating back to 1965. Though they were only expected to sell for around £18,000 to £22,000, the pieces of jewelry brought in a whooping £35,000. The second item, a photograph frame made by Cartier in the 20th century, raised £5,000, nearly double the estimated price.
The bangle is rendered in black and white enamel, and features a design of tigers’ heads, complete with ruby eyes, red enamel tongues and single cut diamond noses. Each tiger is shown to be holding a diamond hoop in their mouth. The Cartier piece is a gold frame, set with sapphires.
These items were a part of the collection that sparked a bidding frenzy at the Christie’s auction in 2006. Each one was engraved with the letter ‘M’ beneath a coronet, the royal monogram of Princess Margaret, and was accompanied by a Certificate of Provenance.
“We are please these items achieved such strong prices,” said Jean Ghika, of Bonhams.
The Queen’s younger sister, Princess Margaret was well known and noticed for her jewels and tiaras, many of which she borrowed from her mother, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. After Margaret’s death in 2002, her personal possessions passed onto her children, Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto. Over the years, most of her jewels have been auctioned.
An intricate and exquisite sapphire and diamond bow brooch, from around 1920, remained unsold. It was estimated to fetch between £22,000 and £25,000.
