The Prince of Wales will be in Barbados as it removes the British Monarch as Head of State.
Prince Charles has been invited to the country for the historic event by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley.
The Queen’s rule in Barbados ends on November 30th 2021 when the country officially becomes a republic. The island’s Governor General Dame Sandra Mason will be sworn in on that date as its first President.
The Prince of Wales, who will now never be Head of State in Barbados, has been invited in his role as future Head of the Commonwealth and will be among the guests of honour. Prince Charles will also undertake a short series of engagements while on the island.
Barbados announced its intention to become a republic in September 2020. Sandra Mason was nominated as President by the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader Joseph Atherley and unanimously elected by the country’s parliament on October 12th 2021.
The last country to remove The Queen as Head of State was Mauritius in 1992. Elizabeth II remains Monarch in fifteen countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Belize. In the Caribbean, The Queen is the head of state in Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines.
