Where are the expenses for Prince Harry and the Cambridges?

Each year an Annual Review is released to the public with making the expenses of members of the Royal Family transparent.

This year, it has been noted that The Queen will receive an 8.1 percent increase as of April 2018 to £82.2 million and that the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have had an increase of income and funding of £617 000 from 2016 to 2017. Yet many are left asking, where is the breakdown of expenses for Prince Harry and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge?

The children and their spouses of Prince Charles are funded through the Duchy of Cornwall which brought in £20.7 million last year, £3.5 million of that went to the Duke and Duchess and Prince Harry for their “activities” and “capital expenditure and transfer to reserves” for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Despite that number including the extras for Charles and Camilla, it is still an 8.6 percent increase from the previous year.

Other than that sliver of information we are left guessing as to what that money is being used for. The three Royals perform the lowest number of engagements but on a per cost basis bring up on the highest price tags.

We can presume the breakdown includes the wardrobe, cost of travel, official duties and tours, but besides playing a less interesting game of MadLibs we are left in the dark to what those exact numbers are.

The three young royals are not the only ones whose “private” information is left out, the Duchy of Lancaster that Her Majesty uses to support other working members of the family such as Prince Andrew, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester are considered sensitive and therefore not released.

When Prince Charles becomes Sovereign, he will inherit the Duchy of Lancaster which he will then use to support Prince Harry and other members of the family. Prince William will take on the Duchy of Cornwall and only then will the public be able to see a full breakdown of how the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge use their expenses. Prince Harry’s funds will continue to remain private as long as the rules stay as they are now.
