Prince & Princess of Wales

Meeting the Duchess of Cambridge during #RoyalVisitNL

The Duchess of Cambridge performed her first solo foreign visit today as she visited the Netherlands. She was dressed in a blue skirt suit by Catherine Walker and wore pearl earrings loaned to her by Her Majesty the Queen. She teamed the outfit with Gianvito Rossi suede pumps.

Her first stop was a lunch with the King of the Netherlands, King Willem-Alexander at his home at Villa Eikenhorst. Afterwards she travelled the short distance The Hague, where I and plenty of other fans and press where awaiting her. She arrived at The Mauritshuis a little after 2pm local time and after a short wave to the waiting crowds, went to meet school children in front of the museum. Once inside the museum she was shown around by the gallery director Emilie Gordenker. She visited both the new exhibition “At Home in Holland: Vermeer and Contemporaries from the British Royal Collection” and the museum’s permanent collection, including the “Girl with the Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer. She also attended an art class with children.

The crowds waiting outside were left wondering if the Duchess of Cambridge would come greet them, especially after her car parked particularly close to the gates. She surprised us all after dropping of her clutch on the backseat of the car and coming over the greet us. She shook plenty of hands and when she reached me I asked her if she had enjoyed her visit to the museum. She replied that she had and that the “Girl with the Pearl Earring” was her favourite. She then asked me if I had ever visited the museum to which I replied that I would soon. It was brief conversation but very lovely. It was great that she took the time!

After greeting the crowds she was whisked away to the British Ambassador’s Residence in The Hague for a round-table discussion. Her very last stop of the day was in Rotterdam, where she visited the Bouwkeet, a new community-focused initiative in the centre of an economically deprived district.
