A Kensington Palace source has said that the Duke of Cambridge has been “deeply saddened” to learn about the death of leading British cancer expert, Professor Martin Gore. Gore died at the age of 67 in the morning of 10 January. Gore went into total organ failure after a being administered a yellow fever vaccine.
His Royal Highness was said to have written a private condolence letter to Gore’s family, as well.
Prince William presented Gore with a lifetime achievement award in 2015 as part of his role as the President of the Royal Marsden. Gore had formerly been a medical director at Royal Marsden where he worked for over 35 years.
In 2016, The Queen named him as a CBE in her annual Birthday Honour’s List for his services to oncology.
Aside from the Duke of Cambridge’s condolences, others in the medical field have also expressed their sadness at losing such a great medical mind.
Professor Charlie Swanton – a former trainee of Gore’s at the Royal Marsden, remarked that Gore was a “truly great man.”
“He dedicated his life to improving the evidence base for cancer care, and he was a true inspiration to oncologists around him, as well as a pioneer in immunotherapy. There is barely a hospital in Britain that hasn’t got a medical oncologist in it inspired by Martin, and they would have walked to the South Pole for him if he had demanded it,” Swanton said in part.
Professor Gore was internationally renowned for his work on various cancers including skin and ovarian. He was also a pioneer in immunotherapy work, as well as the molecular basis of the disease, according to The Times.
There will now be an investigation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to determine if the yellow fever vaccine is to blame for Gore’s death.
