Jubilee Travel tips: Staines upon Thames, an historic stopover close to Windsor

Read Time:2 Minute, 36 Second

The Platinum Jubilee will see a whole raft of celebrations take place across the UK throughout 2022 with some major events already attracting plenty of attention. It means that hotel and travel will get booked up pretty quickly so if you are already planning to get close to the Platinum action, Royal Central has plenty of tips for where to stay to enjoy the sights of this historic royal milestone.

Windsor will be at the heart of many of the celebrations. As well as being among the most famous royal residences in the world, it’s the setting for one of spring’s stand out events, the Windsor Horse Show. This is one of The Queen’s favourite spectacles and takes place in her back garden as the grounds of the Castle are taken over to celebrate all things equine. Unsurprisingly, the 2022 edition is all about the Platinum Jubilee while a special event, A Gallop Through History, will be held as the Show culminates to mark the 70th anniversary of The Queen’s reign.

The Show is on between May 12th and May 15th 2022 but Windsor will also see other events marking the Jubilee while the Castle itself is expected to play host to a special exhibition as Elizabeth II makes yet more royal history. The town itself is relatively small and accommodation gets booked up quickly. But there are a number of nearby options, including the pretty location of Staines-on-Thames.

Staines and Windsor

The two locations aren’t that far apart. In fact, you can reach Windsor from Staines in around a quarter of an hour by public transport. The train to Windsor and Eton Riverside takes 17 minutes with two services an hour. Trains are run by South Western Railway and day returns are £4.60 for an adult.

It’s also easy to get to for British and international travellers. Staines is just five miles from Heathrow Airport and it’s close to the M25 making it easy to drive to.

Accommodation wise, there are a couple of chains in the area. The Premier Inn is about half a mile from the train station while the Mercure is also close to the rail link. The town also has a number of independent hotels including the rather royally named ”The Boleyn” which can trace its roots back to the 16th century and the riverside ”The Swan”.

Staines is also well served with self catering options including short let apartments and cottages.

It’s also got some royal history of its own that will keep you entertained during your Jubilee stay. Staines was where the barons met ahead of confronting King John in Runnymede before the signing of the Magna Carta. The church of St. Mary also contains a stained glass window given by Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, Victoria, when she was Crown Princess of Prussia. She and her husband donated it in memory of their children’s governess, Augusta Maria Byng, who was born in the area.

Staines is well priced in comparison with other areas close to Windsor and it’s got great connections to Windsor as well as to London.
