Prince Andrew unveils war memorial

It was a sombre day Tuesday in a Berkshire town as The Duke of York unveiled a very long overdue war memorial.

After campaigners raised £26,000, a war memorial was installed at Woodford Park in Woodley which in the past has had no fixed focal point for remembrance ceremonies. This all changed today as Prince Andrew unveiled a 12ft Portland stone obelisk at the heart of the park.

The memorial marks the first permanent tribute to the residents of Woodley killed in past conflicts and the Woodley War Memorial Project have had their wish granted as the memorial has been erected in time for the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

“We’re delighted, it will be visible to everyone passing by, which is what we’ve wanted. The public, businesses and schools have rallied round and raised funds the children in particular have been fantastic,” Councillor Bill Sloane commented.

The memorial was given the green light by Wokingham Borough Council at the end of May and Woodley Town Council even stumped up the cash to ensure the park was up to scratch to accommodate the memorial.

The war memorial is now central to the new civic space on the memorial ground and at the event on Tuesday, The Duke of York laid a memorial wreath at the foot of the monument.

2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and commemorative events being held across the country, many of which will be attended by members of The Royal Family.

On Wednesday, Prince William visited Coventry’s War Memorial Park. He visited in his role as President of Fields in Trust, which aims to highlight the importance of war memorial parks and playing fields dedicated to those killed during the First World War.
