Prince Edward to Return to Saskatchewan

Returning to Saskatchewan for the fifth time, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, will visit the province 17th through 19th September. He was last in Saskatchewan in 2006 and this time he will visit Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon and Swift Current.

Canada is a constitutional monarchy, separate from the United Kingdom, and the personal presence of the royal family “reminds Canadians of their heritage and political culture as a parliamentary democracy” according to the Government of Saskatchewan. Visits from the royal family also draws international awareness to Saskatchewan, which sheds light on their education, health care, resources, and other industries.

In 1989, The Duke and Duchess of York toured the province and helped to publicize the Canada Summer Games in Saskatoon as well as promote the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina. These visits help to broadcast charities and other organizations in Canada that has the ability to help citizens.

Prince Edward first visited Saskatchewan in 1978 with his parents, The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, and helped to celebrate local anniversaries. He visited Regina in 1994 and returned to Saskatchewan in 2003, and renaming the historic post office building in his honour commemorated this visit. Prince Edward returned to the province in 2006 and was invested as the second honorary member in the Saskatchewan Order of Merit during this trip.

During his time away from Canada, Prince Edward maintains ties with the country through various means. Prince Edward’s love of the theatre extends far into Saskatchewan as he became a patron of the Globe Theater in 1992 and a drama scholarship has been established in his name, the Prince Edward Drama Scholarship. Commemorating the 2003 visit, the scholarship awards approximately $500 (CAD) towards a resident between the ages of 13-18 to attend a drama training program.

Prince Edward has received a number of honorary military appointments in Canada, including that of Colonel-in-Chief of the Saskatchewan Dragoons from 2003, continuing today.

More details of his trip will be published as they are made available.
