Countess of Wessex and Princess Royal to attend Great Yorkshire Show

<![CDATA[Two Royal visitors will attend the 2014 Great Yorkshire show in Harrogate this July. The Countess of Wessex will make a visit to the show on Tuesday 8th July, while The Princess Royal will attend on Wednesday 9th July.
This year, the show will begin on July 8th, just two days after the Grand Depart of the 2014 Tour de France passes Harrogate and Knaresborough en route to Sheffield from York.

The Countess of Wessex’s attendance at the show will be her first, while Princess Anne has been to the show on several occasions, the most recent being in 2010.
The history of the Great Yorkshire Show is intimately connected with that of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. With its foundation in 1837, the primary aim of the YAS was ‘to hold an annual meeting for the exhibition of farming stock’. By 1843 the YAS had become known as the Great Yorkshire Show, apparently by popular acclamation rather than in any official sense.

When discussing the Royal visitors to the show, Bill Cowling, Honorary show director, said: “This is super news and will make it a very special show, both for us and our thousands of visitors”.
The show takes place at the Great Yorkshire Showground on the edge of Harrogate and around 135,000 visitors are expected to attend. This will be the 156th Great Yorkshire Show.
The Prince of Wales is Patron of the GYS and he and the Duchess of Cornwall attended in 2011. Prior to this, Her Majesty The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended in 2008.
Tickets for the show are available online or from the show’s office at the Regional Agricultural Centre, Harrogate.
