The Queen to meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands today

The Queen is to receive King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and his wife Queen Maxima at Windsor Castle today.

This will be the first time The Queen will have met the newly inaugurated couple since they become the King and Queen.

King and Queen

The Queen will meet with the new King and Queen of the Netherlands today.

Willem-Alexander became King in April when Queen Beatrix abdicated in favour of her son.

Beatrix had announced she would be standing down in January in an address to the nation, saying Willem-Alexander was ready to be king and it was time for a “new generation’.

Huge crowds gathered outside the Palace in Dam Square as the three royals emerged on the balcony after signing the deed of abdication.

“I am happy and grateful to introduce to you your new king, Willem-Alexander,” Beatrix announced to the crowds being met by rapturous applause.

After a moment to take in the scene, Beatrix left the balcony and the new king and queen’s three children appeared.

Catharina-Amalia, the couple’s eldest daughter, now becomes Princess of Orange and is first in line for the Dutch throne.

Willem-Alexander is the country’s first king since 1890.

Royals from around the world attended the day’s celebrations as Willem-Alexander became king and Britain was represented by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

I was wondering why the timing and was expecting the new King and Queen to receive the Royal Victorian Order, or something similar. But I haven’t found any news to that effect. Any ideas?

Hi. It was a private, non-state visit yesterday – I don’t think gifts were exchanged, though I suspect they may visit the UK on a state visit sometime in the not-too-distant future.
