Queen Elizabeth will take private audience with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau

Tomorrow, Queen Elizabeth will hold a private audience with Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau.

Since becoming Prime Minster in 2015, The Queen and the Prime Minister have met once. The meeting was held at Buckingham Palace just after Trudeau and the Liberal Party won the Canadian elections.

This time around their meeting will take place at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, Scotland as Her Majesty spends the week, as she does every year.

Aside from their meeting once Trudeau became Prime Minster, Justin Trudeau met The Queen in the 1970s as a child when his father, Pierre Trudeau was the Prime Minster of Canada.

On 1 July, Canada marked it’s 150 birthday. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were in the Canadian capital, Ottawa to help ring in the celebrations. The Queen, who at 91-years-old has passed overseas journeys to younger royals, did not skip past the milestone, instead, releasing a Canadian-themed portrait to mark the occasion.

Sitting on an ornate gold-coloured chair and wearing a pale gold dress, Her Majesty sported a platinum Canadian maple-leaf brooch on her left shoulder, a piece of jewellery she inherited from her mother Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The portrait was taken by Toronto-based photographer Ian Leslie Macdonald.

The same maple-leaf brooch has been worn both by the Duchess of Cornwall on tour to Canada in 2009 and then by the Duchess of Cambridge in 2011 on her first tour of the country.

Trudeau’s office said that he is looking forward to meeting with The Queen again and will thank her for her dedication to Canada and for “carrying out her duties with such grace and strength.”

Before meeting Her Majesty, Trudeau will stop over in Dublin to chat with Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar about CETA, the Canada-EU trade deal and creating “good, middle-class jobs” in both countries.

After Dublin and Edinburgh, Trudeau will be in Hamburg, Germany to attend the G20 summit.
