Prince Philip should be ‘celebrated’

The Queen will go down in history with a lengthy list of records and will be celebrated in life and textbooks for ages, but if it was up to Actor Matt Smith, the Duke of Edinburgh should be just as “celebrated.”

Speaking to The Observer, the 35-year-old actor found “a lot to celebrate in Philip.”

Recalling his role as the Duke in Netflix’s hit drama, ThCrown, Smith said:

“Rightly, as a society, we’ve celebrated Elizabeth as a wonderful example of a powerful, stylish, brilliant woman,

“But in many ways, what an example of a roguish, brilliant man. Why aren’t we as men allowed to celebrate that, fictionally or not? And I just found a lot to celebrate in Philip.”

Season two of The Crown will be available on Netflix come 8 December. The first season examined the early years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, while season two will delve into the life of Prince Philip- including a storyline of the Duke’s five-month solo-tour and a fictitious affair.

“If you strip away the royal family-ness of it, it’s two human beings,” Smith said

“I challenge anyone if their partner said, ‘By the way, you’re going off for five months,’ to not go, ‘Whoa, hang on!’ And I defy anyone to be married as long as they have and it be plain sailing the whole way. As human beings, they’ve struggled.”

So do The Queen and Prince Philip watch the show and what do they think of the storyline?

Smith also revealed that a friend, “a man of prominence in the film world,” was invited to a dinner held by The Queen and figured just to come out with it and ask Prince Philip if he has seen it.

“What do you do? Are you involved in this Crown thing?” the Duke replied.

Smith’s friend answered no but by the end of dinner re-asked the question:“Philip, I’m just wondering, because I have some friends who made The Crown, have you watched any?”

Of the conversation, Smith said: “Whether it’s true or not, I don’t know, but I just think he’s a bit of a cool cat.

“And that’s what I love about him: he’s done what he wants, when he wants, how he wants, with whom he wants. He hasn’t asked permission. And his wife’s the Queen.”

Season two also features a storyline of The Queen’s and Jackie Kennedy’s relationship.
