Earlier on Tuesday, The President Xi and Madame Peng enjoyed a private lunch at Buckingham Palace, given by The Queen. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were also in attendance at the luncheon.
Following the private lunch, Her Majesty invited the President and Madame Peng to view an exhibition in the Picture Gallery of items from the Royal Collection relating to China.
The ceremonial exchanging of gifts during State Visits took place prior to seeing the various treasures from the Royal Collection.
The Queen gave the Chinese president a collection of Shakespeare’s sonnets, and Madame Peng a pair of Royal Crown Derby candlesticks.
President Xi gave the Queen and Philip two of his wife’s music albums among other gifts. Madame Peng is a famous folk singer in China.
As is custom during state visits, the world leader was also presented with a pair of silver framed photographs of the Queen and the Duke
Some of the items on display today included a porcelain vase, with a light blue ground decorated with dark blue stylised blooms of lotus, peony and chrysanthemum. It was given to Queen Victoria by the Chinese Ambassador Chang Yen Hoon, to mark her Diamond Jubilee.
President Xi and his wife viewed the terracotta replica of a kneeling archer from Li Qingwei, and then Governor of Shaanxi Province. The piece was gifted to Her Majesty during her State Visit in 1986 to the excavation of the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang.
Later on Tuesday afternoon, the President and Madame Peng visited the Palace of Westminster, where they were welcomed by the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker. The President delivered an Address in the Royal Gallery to Members of Houses of Parliament and other guests.
Following their visit to the Palace of Westminster, President Xi and Madame Peng met with The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at Clarence House. The President and Madame Peng viewed a display by The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts and met students. Following the viewing and meeting, they joined join Charles and Camilla for tea.
The last engagement for the day before the much anticipated State Banquet this evening will be The Duke of Cambridge calling on the President at Buckingham Palace. Following this, President Xi will receive an official call at Buckingham Palace by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Jeremy Corbyn, MP.
