Church of England picks ten-year-old’s logo for The Queen’s birthday

Out of over a thousand entries, the Church of England’s commemorative logo for Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday celebrations was designed by a ten-year-old boy.

The Church of England held a contest throughout its schools to decide on a logo for the celebrations, and young Luke Salinger’s design – children holding hands around a cross with the Queen’s insignia and the Royal Crown at the top – was chosen as the winning entry.

“I feel amazed that my design was chosen,” says Salinger. “I feel lost for words!”

Salinger attends the Potten End CofE Primary School in Hertfordshire, and his school will celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday with a street party.

The cross in Salinger’s winning design is based upon the cross that hangs in his village church, Holy Trinity.

“I am so pleased that Lucas has incorporated the cross design that hangs in our church in Potten End,” says school head teacher Andrew Morris.

“Lucas is a thoughtful and talented young man who thoroughly deserves recognition for his hard work on the logo.”

The Queen’s 90th birthday is poised to be a huge celebration in Great Britain, with a four-day party taking place in May at Windsor Castle.

The May celebrations will highlight the Queen’s “love of horses, her dedication to the Commonwealth and international affairs and her deep involvement with the Navy, Army and Air Force,” according to the official website.

The Queen’s official birthday will be celebrated on 11 June, with a full weekend of celebrations including a thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral, a street party in The Mall, and a Birthday Parade.

On the Queen’s actual birthday, 21 April, a 41 gun salute will take place in Hyde Park, a 21 gun salute will take place in Windsor Great Park, and a 62 gun salute will take place at the Tower of London.
