On 6 February Queen Elizabeth will be celebrating her Sapphire Jubilee as she reigns for 65 years. Leading up to this milestone we will look back at some of the moments to go down in history.
11 February 1952– After the death of her father, George VI died on 6 February 1952 Queen Elizabeth became monarch. Five days later, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret wore black veils on their trip from Sandringham Castle to Buckingham Palace for the funeral of their husband and father.
2 June 1953– After an appropriate amount of morning, Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation took place. Queen Mary, grandmother of Elizabeth died less than three months previous but insisted the coronation go as planned. 25 February 1954– Queen Elizabeth opens the Melbourne Parliament. Here is she pictured after the opening ceremony accompanied by two members of the House wearing robes and wigs during the Royal Tour of Australia
14 May 1955– Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip attend the Windsor Horse Show with Prince Charles and Princess Anne. Relaxing in lawn chairs, they watch a Child’s Pony competition in which Princess Anne’s pony ‘William’ is competing.
30 January 1956– Oba Adeniji Adele II, King of Lagos (under the umbrella) greets Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philp while on their tour.
1957– Queen Elizabeth delights onlookers as she drives her children, Prince Charles and Princess Anne at Windsor.
26 March 1958– Queen Elizabeth II joins Crown Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands for a walk among the flowers during a visit to the flower auction in Aalsmeer, Netherlands.
1 November 1959– Queen Elizabeth takes Princess Anne on a boat trip on Frogmore lake at Windsor.
9 September 1960– The Royal Family are pictured at Balmoral Castle with the newest addition to the family, Prince Andrew who was born on 19 February that year.
25 January 1961- During her tour of India, Her Majesty sits in a howdah on the back of an elephant at Benares.
