The Royal Yachting Association, led by their president the Princess Royal, held their Volunteer Awards ceremony in Great George Street, Westminster this weekend. Princess Anne was on hand to present the awards, including one to a member of the Rye Harbour Sailing Club, Richard Hopper.
The Rye Harbour Sailing Club is presently a combination of two clubs, the Rye Bay Yacht Club and the Rye Harbour Sailing Club, founded in 1925 and 1934 respectively. Located on the River Rother, the club enjoys excellent sailing all year around. They have both active dinghy and cruising divisions as well as year-round sailing and social events.
Richard Hopper, Membership Secretary with the RHSC, was awarded by Princess Anne the Lifetime Commitment award for his dedication to boating.
Duncan Truswell, RYA sport development manager, said: “The awards are all about celebrating the commitment of the countless volunteers who do fantastic work to support our sport.”
“These people are the lifeblood of our sport, they keep our sailing clubs, events and organisations thriving and make it possible for others to get out on the water,” Truswell added.
