US congressional candidate tweets racist photo of Meghan Markle

Yes, sadly this is a thing that happened in 2018.

Today in racist photos posted on Twitter: a US politician posted one of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement photos with the recently revealed Cheddar Man skeleton superimposed over her face.

Paul Nehlen, a Republican running for Congress in Wisconsin, posted the photo to his Twitter page with the caption, “Honey, does this tie make my face look pale?”

The Cheddar Man skeleton was unveiled earlier in the week and noted that the earliest Britons were likely dark skinned with blue eyes and curly hair.

It might not be shocking to note that Nehlen is a Trump supporter, self-proclaimed “constitutional conservative”, white supremacist, and member of the alt-right who has been backed by Steve Bannon in the last election, which he handily lost to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. Nehlen is trying to unseat him again in the upcoming election.

Nehlen’s account was suspended by Twitter because of the photo.

It’s not the first time that racists have made Meghan Markle their target since her relationship with Prince Harry was revealed. Not even a month ago, the leader of Britain’s UKIP Party was in hot water when his then-girlfriend’s racist texts about Meghan Markle were published.

Prince Harry also took an enormous step in releasing a statement in 2016 through Kensington Palace to condemn those hurling abuse and harassment at Meghan, noting that “some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”

Among those who leapt to Meghan’s defence with the Cheddar Man photo was her former Suits co-star and on-screen fiancé, Patrick J. Adams, who tweeted, “You’re a sad and sick man with no sense of shame or class.

“Get a life. And don’t go anywhere near MM – she’s got more power, strength, honor and compassion in her fingernail than you’ll ever know in this lifetime. Way above your weight class.”
