The Silverstone Heritage Experience (THSE) have been pleased to announce this week that Prince Harry will be their Royal Patron, as they strive towards producing an exhibition centre at the racing circuit in time for the 70th anniversary of the first grand prix being held their which is in 2018. This project has been running since 2013 when a stage 1 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund was successful and later this year a stage II grant for £9.1million towards a total cost of £20million will be submitted.
One of the groups behind this project is the British Racing Drivers Club, its President, John Watson said ‘We are delighted that Prince Harry has agreed to be the project’s Royal Patron. He has expressed his support for the project and the opportunity to recognise the part Britain has played in motorsport historically and also the vital role British expertise plays in the modern era. HRH is keen to draw attention to this contribution as a means of encouraging more people into engineering and the thriving British motor sport industry’.
Prince Harry has already seen the benefits the car industry has done for ex-service personnel, with this he is keen to promote engineering to the youth of today, by them seeing how successful not only British racing drivers like David Coulthard and Lewis Hamilton have been. But that behind their success and some of the well-known foreign drivers has been the hard work and skill of British engineers and workers.
When the exhibition is finished, it will feature a two-hour journey through the past, present and the future of motor racing. State of the art technology will be used to tell the story of people who have been involved in that story going way back to medieval monks, and to the marshals of modern day racing. It is hoped by showing the young people of today, how Britain has been at the centre of innovation within global motorsport, that it will inspire them to become the people to ensure we keep our pole position as a centre of excellence.
