Prince Harry gives Armed Forces a supporting role at his wedding

Earlier today, the Ministry of Defence confirmed the roles that the Armed Forces will play at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The wedding that will take place on 19 May at St George’s Chapel, Windsor will be supported by over 250 members of the Armed Forces.

The couple has picked regiments and units that “hold a special relationship with Prince Harry will provide ceremonial support at the wedding and during the carriage procession at the request of Kensington Palace.”

Prince Harry joined The Blues and Royals in April 2006, serving with the Household Cavalry Regiment. During this time he toured Afghanistan twice and was promoted to Captain.

The Household Cavalry will line the lengthy staircase ascending into the chapel. The State Trumpeters and a Captain’s Escort from the Household Cavalry will also support the ceremony.

During the carriage procession, the streets within Windsor Castle will be lined with members of the Windsor Castle Guard formed by the 1st Battalion Irish Guards and other Armed Forces personnel.

The personnel all have a close relationship to Prince Harry and include the Royal Navy Small Ships and Diving which Harry is Commodore-in-Chief, and 3 Regiment Army Air Corps in which Prince Harry served in Helmand Province with the 662 Squadron. The Royal Gurkha Rifle whom Prince Harry served with the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles in Afghanistan in 2007 and the RAF Honington which Harry is Honorary Air Commandant.

Lastly, the Royal Marines will line the streets as well. Just after his engagement was announced to Meghan Markle, The Queen honoured Prince Harry as the new Captain General Royal Marines taking over from his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Music will be provided by the Bank of the Irish Guards.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to be “pleased that members of the Armed Forces will play such a special role in their Wedding. The Military, and these units in particular, hold a great significance for Prince Harry and the couple are incredibly grateful for their support.”

There is no doubt now that the prince will be in uniform. Do you think it will be The Blues and Royals in which Prince Harry served with or his new appointment as Captain General Royal Marines? Let us know in the comments below:
