International demand for Welsh cakes because of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s visit to Wales on Thursday has helped a Welsh bakery achieve global interest.

Village Bakery, which presented a traditional Welsh cake – similar to a scone but cooked on a griddle instead of in the oven – to the couple during their visit to Wrexham.

“She introduced herself as Meghan and said it was her first Welsh cake. Meghan then asked if she could take some home with her and they were included in a hamper of Welsh produce that they were given,” said Thomas Kellery, Village Bakery’s account manager, to British Baker.

Village Bakery said that they’d been receiving calls from the United States inquiring about Welsh cakes since Prince Harry and Meghan visited.

“She asked if the Village Bakery was a family-owned company and was impressed when I said it was and that it had been going for more than 80 years.”

Meghan had never tasted a Welsh cake before her visit to the country on Thursday and was overheard gushing after she’d tasted it.

“I was a bit nervous about the idea of meeting them, but they were lovely and made you feel at ease immediately,” Kellery told The Daily Post.

“They were absolutely delightful and so obviously in love. The chemistry between them was plain to see; they just sparked off each other.”

Prince Harry revealed to Kellery that he puts Marmite on his crumpets. “Our crumpets are very versatile, but I’ve never heard of that particular combination before. But I’m certainly going to give it a try. It could become a new craze.”

The couple, who will marry at Windsor Castle in May, are said to have booked Table Top as their caterers for their big day, although Kensington Palace has yet to confirm. Table Top did the catering for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding as well as Pippa Middleton’s wedding last spring.
