After spending his gap year in Lesotho in 2004, Prince Harry teamed up with Princes Seeiso to start Sentebale.
Launching in 2006, Sentebale helps children in Lesotho receive access to support they would otherwise be without. The children who suffer from extreme poverty and the effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic now have the chance to “lead healthy and productive lives”.
The two hope their foundation will become the “leading organisation” in helping youth living with “HIV in Southern Africa”.
The name Sentebale means ‘forget me not’ named “as a memorial to the charity work of our own mothers, as well as a reminder to us all not to forget Lesotho or its children”, Prince Harry told the crowds at Concert for Diana.
There are five projects the Sentebale focuses the majority of its energy on. The Mamohato Children’s Centre which was built for the charity’s continuous work with disadvantaged children and young people living with HIV and official opened in November 2015. At the centre week long camps take place to educate children with HIV, there is also bi-monthly camps for those who have already attended the centre and now would like to spread their education about the disease and staying safe to the community, and days medical professionals are connected with the kids and their families.
The second project is the Herd Boys Education Programme, which supports five herd boys schools. The herd boys are boys who follow their cattle where ever they may go, eating and sleeping with them, often dropping out of school so they may help their families out. Care for Vulnerable Children is another programme supported by Sentebale, partnering with community organisations in care and support for disadvantaged children.
The last two projects are school bursaries and Letsema. The school bursaries help youth complete their secondary school education covering all costs of the education, clothing, food and any resources they may need. Lastly, Letsema is a network for the grassroots organisations, community groups and NGOs in Lesotho that work with the children. The network helps all the different groups share tools and information so all may succeed better.
