Prime Minister David Cameron sends best wishes to Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall

David Cameron has sent his best wishes to parents-to-be Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said the news was “quite terrific,” and said David would be sending his “very, very best wishes to the royal couple.”

Zara and Mike announced they were expecting their first child on Monday morning.

“Mr and Mrs Mike Tindall are very pleased to announce that Zara Tindall is expecting a baby in the New Year,” a statement released by Buckingham Palace confirmed.

In recent years, the 32-year-old royal has become a Olympic-winning Equestrian and in the London 2012 won Silver for Great Britain. The daughter of Princess Anne had previously said she was planning to take part in the next games to be held in Rio in 2016.

“She can still compete, it totally depends on horses and whether she feels it’s appropriate,” a spokesman for the couple said shortly after it was confirmed Zara was expecting her first child.

Both Zara and Mike’s parents expressed their joy at the news. “The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips, Mr Phillip and Mrs Linda Tindall, and members of both families are delighted with the news.

The sportive couple married in 2011, just months after the wedding of cousin Prince William to the Duchess of Cambridge, in a ceremony in Scotland. The modest nuptials, held at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, was attended by the Royal Family and crowds gathered outside the church hoping to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds.

The bride dazzled in a white Stewart Parvin dress waving to the crowds who had waited hours to see the wedding party arrive.

Last year Mike revealed his desire to start a family with his wife. “Obviously we’re going to have a family. But it’s about timing,” the rugby player said speaking at the launch of his Rugby for Heros charity launch.
