Proud Uncle Harry catches Prince George’s first smile

Prince HarryThis past Wednesday evening at the WellChild Awards, Prince Harry was beaming with pride. Speaking with the children who were recipients of the WellChild Awards, Prince Harry boasted of how he finally saw his nephew, Prince George smile for the first time.

Speaking with nominee Nikki Christou, a nine year old from North London, Prince Harry seemed rather delighted when she revealed that she and Prince George share the same birthday, her father is named George and she has a brother who shares one of George’s middle names, Alexander. “Wow, very, very weird,” Prince Harry was quoted in the Daily Mail as saying to the young girl. He continued: “I’ve just literally seen him. Normally when I see him he’s either sleeping or crying but I’ve just seen him smile. It was the first time I’ve seen him smile.”

Prince Harry gave a passionate and unscripted speech at the end of the awards. He called the award winners “unbelievably brave” according to ITV and continued by stating: “I’m hugely humbled to be patron of WellChild and I count myself incredibly lucky to be patron, as well as coming down here this evening.”

In 2007, Prince Harry became the first Royal Patron of WellChild. WellChild is a national charity serving the specific needs of sick children as they deal with the consequences of life threatening illnesses. Prince Harry has played a keen role in the work of WellChild, meeting with numerous children, nurses, researchers and volunteers who have been part of the charity. At the WellChild Awards, Prince Harry spent time with each individual winner, getting to know them, their stories and bringing some humour and joy into their lives. He does not stop there. Prince Harry also visits the homes of sick children who are in the care of a WellChild nurse to see firsthand the care given and to possibly provide the child with a fond memory of his visit. Wellchild affords vital hands-on and passionate care for extremely ill children and young people, as well as their caregivers throughout the United Kingdom, to guarantee they have the finest possible care available.
