Meghan takes a day off maternity leave to join husband for MLB Invictus game

The Duchess of Sussex has taken a day off her maternity leave to join her husband, the Duke of Sussex for the Major League Baseball (MLB) game in London between archrivals – the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The game is being played in partnership between the MLB and the Invictus Games Foundation today and tomorrow in London’s Olympic Park.

The Duke and Duchess visited both teams ahead of the game and received Red Sox and Yankee onesies for their baby son, Archie. Meghan also gave a hug to a Red Sox player while Prince Harry laughed and smiled at her side.

Their Royal Highnesses are also due to attend a reception with former UK and US Invictus competitors and join the competitors as they throw out the first pitch before taking in the game. Meghan, who was born and raised in the US, is sure to enjoy America’s favourite pastime sport. The Duchess of Sussex has been spotted in a New York Yankees hat several times in the past, but there’s no word on if she will be supporting New York in this competition.

The Kingdom Choir, which performed during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 2018 wedding, performed the national anthems ahead of the game.

Earlier this month, it was announced that the MLB and the MLB Player’s Association had chosen the Invictus Games Foundation as the Official Charity Partner of the Mitel and MLB Present London Series 2019.

At the time, they said, “This partnership between MLB, the MLBPA and the Invictus Games Foundation will highlight the inclusive nature of baseball, celebrate the military community, and inspire society by showcasing the positive impact of engaging with sports, competitors, and events like the Mitel and MLB Present London Series 2019.”

This marks the first time an MLB game has been played in Europe.

Prince Harry founded the Invictus Games for wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and veterans from all over the globe to compete in various competitions. It has been hosted in London, Orlando, Toronto and Sydney. The Hague is the next host for the May 2020 Invictus Games.
