Prince Philip spends 92nd birthday in hospital

Arrival of HRH at Ontario LegislatureHis Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is spending his 92nd birthday in the London Clinic where he was admitted on Thursday afternoon for what was termed ‘exploratory surgery’.

The Duke of Edinburgh is the UK’s longest-serving royal consort, the oldest ever spouse of a reigning British monarch and the oldest ever male member of the British Royal family (a feat achieved earlier this year).

This is the first time the Duke of Edinburgh has spent his birthday in hospital. He recently underwent an operation at the London Clinic, which the doctors regarded as successful and said that the Duke was making ‘satisfactory progress’.

Prince Philip will likely miss this year’s Trooping the Colour due to his admission to hospital. He would’ve travelled with The Queen in a carriage and been on parade as Colonel Grenadier Guards, a colonelcy he has held for around 38 years. Prior to this, the Duke has never missed a parade when it was held.

There has been no announcement about any celebration or commemoration of the Duke’s birthday this year. In 2011, for the Duke’s 90th birthday, Her Majesty The Queen made the Duke Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom. He has been a Field Marshal since 1953 and also an Admiral of the Fleet in the Navy prior to being made Lord High Admiral.

Her Majesty The Queen is expected to visit the Duke in hospital today.

The Duke of Edinburgh is expected to remain in hospital until next week.
