The Duchess of Cornwall’s uphill battle to become Queen

Even mentioning the fact that the Duchess of Cornwall could one day be called ‘Queen Camilla‘ send shivers down some people’s spines. While I am in support of seeing Camilla stand up next to Prince Charles when he eventually becomes King, she has unfortunately hit a series of setbacks.

From the moment Charles and Camilla decided they would spend their life together, Charles’s PR team has been working overtime to bring the public to a level where they would accept Camilla. The first moment the two were photographed together as a couple was carefully planned. The public first learned that the two were back together, despite both being married to other people, in 1986. Finally, in 1999, it was decided that enough time had passed since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales that the two could be seen together and a carefully planned photo op where over 100 photographers were on hand to capture the two leaving Camilla’s sister’s birthday celebration was made. It was a short and sweet introduction to the world.

It was another four years until it was deemed safe for Camilla to move into Clarence House and two more years after that until they could be engaged. The time waiting was never about cold-feet of the couple, but the cold-feet of the nation. To help ensure the wedding went smoothly, it was announced that Camilla would never hold the title of Queen, only Princess Consort, and it was only until recently, with the public opinion of Camilla on the rise, that it has been rumoured that she may receive the title of Queen Consort after all. Well, this was until the recent influx of documentaries on Diana’s life that have painted Camilla in a less than flattering light.

As most documentaries come across, the stories told are only from one side, Diana’s side, and while her stories hold weight, they paint Diana as the victim even if she has partly to blame. All the work, day in and day out, to create acceptance for Camilla has now been swept under the rug as we re-live Diana’s words. The PR team at Clarence House will once again have to rework their strategy.

Camilla, no matter what, will be by Prince Charles’s side when he takes the throne. Just because the public doesn’t hold a high opinion of Camilla (or Charles) does not mean Prince William will be King, there are Succession Laws to be upheld. The only real issue here is for the majority of the population to still see a need for a monarchy, and if the rating for Charles and Camilla is down, it could give Republican’s the upper hand.

I do not doubt that Prince Charles’s years learning from Queen Elizabeth will make him one of the best Sovereign’s we have seen and Camilla’s tireless dedication to her charity work without the need of constant praise will be the best for the U.K. But the battle to accept Camilla has just started all over again.

I will not bow to these two, marriage breakers!Shame on them!Especially Camilla the duchess of”…..”.Sad!

    • Dennis Coleman

Get over it and move on

      • Gregory Ross Miller

I agree with you Dennis Coleman.

    • alwaysroyal

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone …. how appropriate in this case. How can you deny people happiness in this harsh world. Who in their right mind would even want this “job” ?

  • anonymous

Diana, Princess of Wales and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales are by no means saints, the Prince less so. However, I think we should now judge them, not by their previous actions, which were terrible, but by what they do now, by which I mean the charitable activities that both of them carry out. Nobody is a saint, and I think that we should all now move on and acknowledge their current actions and not their previous ones.

    • nmfd72

      Well said! I agree 100%

      • Donna Koslowski

        You’ve Got to be Kidding!!!

        • Kathleen Ames

No we are not Donna. As I said get over it and move on with your life,

    • Lisa Garrett-Dempster

      Agreed!

      • Donna Koslowski

        Are You Serious???

    • Gregory Ross Miller

      Perfect!!!

    • Donna Koslowski

      NO!!!

      • Shabach

        I agree

    • DenAnn

I have not been a Camilla can but all the judgment she has lived with is a testament to her love for Prince Charles, make her Queen.

  • Alan Matthews

I have never met her but I just don’t like her. I would not like to see her with the title of Queen.

    • Dennis Coleman

      Irrational

      • Alan Matthews

Its my opinion to which i am entitled. If you dont like it “tough”

I have met them, although briefly. They were both very warm, and I must say, I admire them for carrying on in the midst of such hateful comments being made.

      • Alan Matthews

My comment was not hateful. Just my opinion

That’s not logical to hate someone you’ve never met. Quite peculiar I would say.

      • Alan Matthews

I did not say i hated her nor slated her. I said i did not like her.

    • Kathleen Ames

Whether you like her is irrelevant. She may not like you either but would be too courteous to say so. Nevertheless as the wife of The King she will be The Queen whatever they call her at the time.

      • Alan Matthews

What happened to free speach or thought in your world. The post asked for opinions and thats mine. Who are you to write to me?

          • Alan Matthews

Yes thats true but to me not on the forum. Anyway i will not be answering anymore comments coming my way.Happy posting.

            Your choice Alan. Cheers.

  • Jason Ronald

Accept Queen Camilla and move on.

    • Dennis Coleman

      Yes yes yes

      • Carol Robson

Never…..she should stay Dutchess….divorce should prevent her from being “Queen” and I’m surprised QE11 doesn’t see this……

        • Gregory Ross Miller

Well, you can’t judge the way Queen Elizabeth II sees things. That’s what makes her the Queen.

          • Donna Koslowski

            What???

        • Celya723

She retains her titles by marriage (duchess x2) upon his elevation as a morganatic wife, without power or influence at court/parliment etc.

          • Kathleen Ames

There will be no morganantic arrangement. Camilla is well past child bearing age and it has never been mentioned,

          • Orchard 10

Morganatic marriage doesn’t EXIST in Britain.. one is either a true wife [which the Princess of Wales IS] or one in no wife at all !

          • Celya723

Only time’ll tell what titles’ll be used by Charles’s succession as his wife would also be known as “princess concort” due to the nature of their marriage and continuing sensitivity about his first wife and the titles she held and stood to inherit had their relationship continued.
There’s no absolutes until these events come to pass, only speculation.

      • Donna Koslowski

        NO!!! NO!!! NO!!!

    • Lisa Garrett-Dempster

      Indeed!

      • Donna Koslowski

        Indeed NOT!!!

    • Gregory Ross Miller

      I’m with you Jason.

      • Donna Koslowski

        I’m NOT With You, Jason!!!

        • Celya723

Relax, Jason has NO influence at court or parliment, lol!

    • Donna Koslowski

      NEVER!!!

  • Orchard 10

The current Princess of Wales doesn’t have an ambitious bone in her body, and certainly hasn’t ‘agitated’ for any rank beyond that of wife to the Man she loves.
The Prince however [being a chivalrous old fashioned sort] naturally wants his wife to be share his position and rank, as ALL married couples in Britain do.
Under our Law a wife ‘takes the style and rank of her husband’ [regardless of whether she is a 1st,2nd,3rd or 4th wife], and that ‘style’ for a Kings wife IS Queen , and has been so for over 1000 years. It will not change now to placate those who ‘cannot move on’ after the Death of the late Princess of Wales.
Camilla WILL be Queen, and rightfully so.

    • Dennis Coleman

      That’s great…a rational argument…unlike the Diana culters

      • Donna Koslowski

        What is RATIONAL???

        • Kathleen Ames

Well not you. That’s for certain,

    • Gregory Ross Miller

Most agreeable but I’d like to add that Camilla ranks 3rd after the Queen and Charles in charitable duties. She is very ambitious and has always been. What she does is from her heart. Diana did a lot just for the sake of publicity.

      • Carol Robson

You are terrible….Diana loved her charity work and did it our of love and caring, not for publicity……Camilla is a farce…she was laughing out of control at a Canadian native singer/dancer on their recent trip to Canada….shameful….

        • Gregory Ross Miller

And you are terrible too. Look, this is not a game of thrones and you people need to read the Regency Act of 1937, which was composed by your parliament. Camilla will be a fine Queen and if you or anyone else don’t like it, just move to America or Iceland or somewhere else.

          • Carol Robson

Yo buddy…I’m Canadian…..Parliament can change (and likely will) the Regency Act of 1937…..Camilla should be Princess Consort…..look it up …..I think Chuck is weak and will be a weak king…..

          • Kathleen Ames

Canada can’t do it without the support of the other Commonwealth countries I believe. However, as the wife of The King, Camilla will be The Queen whether or not they use that title at the time.

          • Donna Koslowski

            Camilla Should NEVER Be Queen!!!

          • Kathleen Ames

Diana has been dead for 20 years. Whether you like or not Camilla with be Queen so get over it!

          • Donna Koslowski

            Agree 1000% !!!

          • Donna Koslowski

            And, We Americans HARE Them!!!

          • Orchard 10

What has it to do with Americans ? We haven’t interfered with your mode of Governance since 1776, and we’d thank you to do the same with ours !

        • Kathleen Ames

She loved the cameras and the attention more!

          • Donna Koslowski

            WHO Is SHE???

          • Kathleen Ames

You know exactly who. The evil little ‘adultereress-six-times-over’ Diana!

        • DenAnn

I laughed at the dancers too, it was funny.

      • Donna Koslowski

        LIAR!!!

    • Carol Robson

      Never….

      • Donna Koslowski

        NEVER, EVER!!!

    • Donna Koslowski

      Dear God, I Pray NOT!!!

    • Celya723

Investigate how their marriage contract was worked out with QEII and the marriage council so they could actually marry, the concessions & terms are interesting.

  • annieathens

There is no need for her to become Queen she will stay as she is when eventually Charles does become King. I agree neither Charles nor Diane were saints and sorry but I would have had more sympathy from her if she had stuck to one man Nor do I believe that she still loved Charles, she wouldn’t have washed their dirty linen in public if that was the case.

    • Orchard 10

She CANNOT ‘stay the same’, because the INSTANT Charles becomes King, William becomes ‘Duke of Cornwall [and Cambridge] and so Catherine will be the duchess with that title.

      • annieathens

I see your point but still say she won’t become queen, they will ind some other title for her, Plenty to spare.

        • Kathleen Ames

Irrelevant what she is called. As the wife of The King, she will be The Queen.

      • Carol Robson

She should be Princess Consort……look it up on google….she does NOT go by Princess of Wales because of the affiliation with Diana….she uses Dutchess…
        ….

        • Kathleen Ames

We don’t call her that but it is her premier and most senior title,

        • annieathens

YEs that would be far more appropriate. There has been talk of changing the current terms and I don’t see why not as if Queens can do it both Victoria and our present Queen why can’t we have the same system for kings.

      • Kathleen Ames

True and if Charles then creates William POW, Catherine will take Camilla’s present senior title of Princess of Wales.

    • Dennis Coleman

      Thank you..exactly right..

    • alwaysroyal

Diana certainly turned into a vile, jealous, hateful woman in a very short time. Well, I correct myself, not turned into but became her true self ….just don’t be around stairs if you were with Diana. Chances were with a little help from Diana you would soon find yourself at the bottom !

      • DPJ

Perhaps Diana wasn’t cut out the live the life in the Court of St. James. One wonders what HRH life would have been like had he married another Royal.

        • Carol Robson

She would have been just fine had Camilla stayed out of their lives….Charles is to blame too…

          • Kathleen Ames

No she wouldn’t because she was always a spoiled brat.

      • Carol Robson

        you are a dreadful person….

      • DenAnn

We all might go mad with our husband and his bold mistress making no secret of their affair.

  • alwaysroyal

I truly hope that Charles and Camilla have a long and happy life together. It is evident that he certainly enjoys his love by his side as he carries out his duty. Who, actually, has the right to judge others ? Let them be. They will survive this quite troubling 20th anniversary, it will not be easy, but all will pass.

    • Gregory Ross Miller

      Very well put.

  • DPJ

“Well, this was until the recent influx of documentaries on Diana’s life that have painted Camilla in a less than flattering light”. Sadly, these documentaries will be aired every year or other anniversaries.

    • Gregory Ross Miller

Financed by Diana supporters so their bias.

      • Carol Robson

You must have the hots for Camilla??!!!

        • Gregory Ross Miller

Carol, quite frankly I respect the royal lineage. My intuitiveness helps keep me focused on the positive. I think Diana would have made a wonderful Queen but unfortunately it didn’t pan out that way. Since Camilla is in the position, why not try to work with her and give her a chance. I do this everyday with students that I teach. Everyone deserves a fair chance. I’ve had troubled students that have become doctors and teachers. One of my troubled students is now a CNN Political Commentator. I say, give Charles and Camilla a chance. Don’t tread on their opportunity.

          • Kathleen Ames

I like what you write Gregory but I disagree entirely that Diana would have made a good Queen. She was too self centred.

  • ChaChi

This woman does not deserve to be Queen. She waited like an animal in the bushes all those years while Diana was married to Charles. Was Diana a Saint? No, she wasnt but didnt deserve to be treated the way she was. Doesnt matter how much the Queen likes her this would be a mistake. Both Charles and Camilla are deviants.

    • Gregory Ross Miller

      Proof please.

      • Donna Koslowski

        Proof of WHAT???

      • ChaChi

        Do your own research.

    • Kathleen Ames

Rubbish, If anyone was the deviant it was Diana. She was evil from the word go.

      • Donna Koslowski

        As Are YOU!!!

        • Kathleen Ames

Ha ha. No one compares to Diana unless perhaps you!

      • Donna Koslowski

The Old COW, Camilla, Needs to learn How to wear a Decent Bra!!! She Looks like a COW!!!

        • Kathleen Ames

I thought your previous remarks were stupid but her bra? Really? I think she should wear what she feels comfortable in and it has nothing to do with her ability to carry out her duties. You possibly flaunt your boobs and think she should?

    • Donna Koslowski

      Thank You!!!

    • DenAnn

And she didn’t care if Diana knew, she rubbed it in Diana’s face to drive her mad. Camilla’s car would pull up to Highgrove and wait for Diana to leave.

      • ChaChi

They all used Diana for their own purposes. At 19….OMG could you imagine? Just have heirs ?? UGH.

        • DenAnn

When she talks about first meeting Charles and him being all over her like a bad rash, I got the feeling she was kind of grossed out by him. If he hadnt been a prince she wouldn’t have looked twice at him. She was young and naive and I think she did love him just the way a 20 year old falls for a wealthy 70 year old, I think some people can make themselves love someone genuinely convincing themself they love them.

  • pamela traves

Camilla will be a wonderful Queen one day. The past is now gone.

    • Gregory Ross Miller

      Amen!

  • JSH

IIRC, there is no uphill battle. When Charles becomes King, Camilla automatically becomes Queen (Consort). Much like when they married she automatically became Princess of Wales.

    • Kathleen Ames

Actually currently there is no such title as Queen Consort, The wives of our Kings are The Queen.

  • SuperJayne

The Queen is in excellent health and may well live 10 more years to 101as her mother did.

Camilla would then be 80 when Charles is crowned. Who knows how the country will feel at that time. Or how Camilla will feel. If Charles is Regent at some point, he may likely announce he will be king for 5 years and then retire at 85 (as Spain has done), giving way to William.

George and Charlotte will be close to university age in 15 years. So they will have some time with their parents before the demands of kingship take over.

Other kings have had unpopular Queen Consorts. If there is a short deadline attached to Charles’ reign, the Brits may accept Camilla as Queen Consort.

I do agree with the sentiment that we should measure our leaders based on the sum of their experiences. Look for growth, wisdom and thoughtful contrition over mistakes. Don’t look for perfection or sainthood.

  • abbygal64

I live in the USA and I think people need to accept her as the Queen when it is time. We watch the Royal family news here and we all loved Princess Di and we mourned her death as much as the Brits did. There will never be another Princess Di, like there will never be another First Lady Jackie Kennedy, but we all have to move on and be with the living.

  • redbirdll

I say she should never be more than an arm piece. She doesn’t deserve any thing else.

    • DenAnn

He picked the ugliest arm candy he could find.

  • Christina von Bonsdorff

    Never Queen Camilla !

  • Celya723

Well played Pr William & Harry! Keep those Diana memorials going at the strategic intervals and that contract signed by QEII, the marriage council, Charles & his morganatic wife camilla for her to retain her husbands titles and the income derived from them and all of it dying with her will continue to be enforced till the day one of them are widowed and William acceeds the throne, well done!

  • Not me

She’s divorced like wallis Simpson ,Charles should not be allowed to be king he’ll he’s divorced to he is a joke

  • Carmichael

No Way u homewrecker never been a fan of yours

  • ChaChi

They should let the British people vote on it. Royals always do what they want to do.

  • Charles G. M. Stuart

Camilla”s original connection to the royal family, was that her great grandmother was a prostitute for the Royal household.
She has done little more than follow in great grannies footsteps… she is NO queen and will never be accepted as such by the British.

  • LAUGHING at LIBERALS!

Wow, and I thought American politics were mad.

  • Shabach

she shouldn’t be Queen because Queen Elizabeth’s husband is called PRINCE Phillip, so that means Camilla should be called duchess or princess
