Prince Charles hosts star-studded event

While Prince William was busy hosting the Centrepoint Awards at Kensington Palace, Prince Charles was holding the Invest in Futures reception at St James’ Palace.

The stars came out in support, including both Dame Helen Mirren and Cheryl Tweedy, who are ambassadors for L’Ordeal Paris, a sponsor for the event. Both the ladies gave speeches during the evening.

The Prince’s Trust started Invest in Futures 12 years ago to encourage the financial community support in need youth to find work, enterprise or receive training.

Since starting, they have raised over £19.5million. L’Oreal Paris partnered with The Prince’s Trust for the ‘All Worth It’ programme to enable 10,000 young people throughout the UK build the skills and confidence to find a job.

Speaking to guests, Dame Helen said: “I think we can all relate to having moments of self-doubt. I certainly experience moments to this day. In fact even today, maybe, just before I came up on this podium.

“I always say building self-confidence is a journey. It doesn’t happen overnight and I am still on this journey.”

Prince Charles also addressed the room, saying: “Many of the young people we come across have faced the most extraordinary hurdles, challenges and obstacles in their lives. “They have all shown, without fail, courage and determination.”

Also in attendance was Sir Tom Jones, who had a lengthy conversation with Prince Charles. Afterwards, he commented: “It is a wonderful thing that a member of the Royal Family has set up a charity like this and is still clearly passionate about what he is doing.

“Young people need chances like this, particularly when they come from difficult backgrounds.”

Other high-profile guests were TV presenter Katie Piper, singer Beverley Knight, former football manager Harry Redknapp and model Neelam Gill.

Earlier in the day, Prince Charles presided over an Investiture ceremony where he handed an MBE to 97-year-old Peggy Maskrey for her volunteer work.
