They may not get chance to eat out much with their public profiles, but Prince Charles and Camilla will pay a visit to a restaurant on Wednesday 16th July. This is not just any old restaurant though, they will visit Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant in London.
Whilst there, they will meet some of the unemployed young people who are currently being trained by the chefs at Fifteen, as well as past graduates of the programme.
The training programme was first thought of in the early 1990s, when Jamie Oliver came up with the idea that cooking was a potential career path for the young and unemployed, especially those who had fallen out of mainstream education. The vision that he had, which took ten years to put in place, was to use the magic of food to give young unemployed people the chance for a brighter future.
The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will also meet local producers who supply the restaurant, and Charles is known for his passion of local sourcing and produce. Charles and Camilla’s Highgrove Estate sells its produce online and the profits go to The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation.
In late 2002, Jamie opened Fifteen in London, where he appointed 15 young apprentices to train alongside a team of 25 professional chefs. All the funds from the restaurant didn’t go to him though, they went to his charity which he set up in order to fund the programme. The charity that receives the profits from Fifteen is the Jamie Oliver Foundation, which not only supports the Fifteen Apprentice Programme, but also works in schools to help teachers teach children about the importance of growing and cooking fresh food.
The charity also works in communities where it holds cooking classes, giving people of all ages the confidence to cook from scratch and make healthier life and food choices. In recognition of his role in establishing Fifteen and his work with youngsters, Jamie was awarded the MBE in 2003, as part of the Queen’s birthday honours.
The trip to Fifteen will no doubt be enjoyable for both Charles and Camilla, though perhaps Camilla will take more from the visit: her son, Tom Parker-Bowles is a food author and critic. From 2002, Tom has been a food writer and broadcaster with a weekly column in The Mail on Sunday. He was also food curator of Heckfield Place when it underwent renovations from 2011 to 2013, and a judge on ITV’s Food Glorious Food. To date there have been four cookbooks written by The Duchess of Cornwall’s son.
In a separate engagement on Wednesday 16th July, Prince Charles and Camilla will meet representatives from Surf Action, a charity that is wholly dedicated to supporting military veterans and their families, which operates on the beach at Watergate Bay.
