Duchess of Cornwall supports campaign to end female genital mutilation

The Duchess of Cornwall has shown her support to stamp out female genital mutilation (FGM), according to a leading campaigner.
One of the founders of Daughters of Eve, a charity for anti-FGM said the Duchess gave the “royal seal of approval” during a reception for the Southbank Centre’s Women of the World festival. The festival is set to begin on 5th March.

Over 60 women attended the reception at Clarence House on Thursday 27th February, including the economist Vicky Pryce, the Everyday Sexism Project founder Laura Bates, and actress Natascha McElhone.

Camilla took the time to speak to guests including three students from Mulberry School for Girls in East London, which she visited last year.

Nico Ali, co-founder of Daughters of Eve charity said “Camilla said she thinks the campaign is terrific and she heard about the stuff we’re doing. She said she was impressed with the work and wanted more information about the campaign.”

The reception was concluded with a speech by Jude Kelly, the artistic director of the Southbank Centre, who thanked everyone for coming and for the Duchess’s support. The Duchess was praised for her interest in the anti-FGM campaign. “For me the Duchess has courage and it’s very natural. She’s not afraid to talk about justice. She believes the monarchy is there to create progress and she’s prepared to bring subjects to the fore” Ms Kelly said.

Camilla’s support comes after the Equality and Human Rights Commission wrote to Norman Baker, the UK minister responsible for the Government’s strategy to combat FGM. In addition, the education secretary, Michael Gove, announced that he will write to all schools in England about FGM.
