William and Kate: DJ’s and graffiti artists in Adelaide

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met with around 100 young musicians and partook in a bit of scratching on the turntable. The Royal couple spent three hours in the suburb of Elizabeth, aptly named for William’s grandmother on Wednesday.

Upon their arrival, The Duke and Duchess had a chance to speak with Lauren Stephenson a 6 year old girl who has battled cancer and is in remission.

William and Catherine stopped by the Northern Sound System, an alternative learning centre utilizing music to engage with underprivileged young people. Whilst at the centre they viewed a performance of hip-hop dances and rap songs written by some of the young adults who attend the centre.

When asked how the Duchess fared on the DJ decks workshop facilitator Shane Petersen commented: “She was fantastic.”

William commented after his go on the decks: “I like house music. I still like a bit of rock and roll and the classics and a bit of R and B.”

He tried his hand after with some aerosol artwork before he and his wife viewed a BMX bike and scooter display. Luke Haldenby one of the skateboarders who performed some tricks for the Royal duo, presented a skateboard with ‘George’ written on the bottom to the Prince’s parents. They both seemed very pleased with the green skateboard complete with Australian flags and kangaroos.

Before unveiling a plaque outside a new plaza named in honour of Prince George, Will and Kate greeted those gathered who lined the streets waiting to catch a glimpse or be lucky to shake hands with either of The Cambridge’s.

The couple then left to attend a civic reception at the Playford Civic Centre, hosted by the Governor,
After the civic reception, they headed back to Canberra to spend the evening with their son.

Created in 1955, the suburb of Elizabeth has had royal visits before. Her Majesty visited in 1963 and officially turned on the tap for the newly built water fountain in the the city centre.
