What to expect from the first few days of the royal tour

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George touched down in Wellington to kick off their royal tour of New Zealand and Australia earlier today.

The tour began in traditional Maori style at Government House, which is the official residence of Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae. The Duke and Duchess were received with a Powhiri welcoming ceremony to celebrate the arrival of the Royal visitors.

Prince William then inspected a guard of honour and the couple received a 21 gun salute. The Royal couple then spent some time with the Governor-General and his wife Lady Janine.

Tomorrow will be a day of rest and relaxation for the family, who will spend this time at a private residence outside of Wellington and will not undertake any engagements.

On Wednesday 9th, William and Catherine will return to Government House as guests of Sir Jerry Mateparae and Lady Janine. Their first engagement will be to recognise the work of the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society, who provide support services for children under the ages of five. Kensington Palace have previously said it is not yet known if the eight month old Prince George will be in attendance at this engagement.

Thursday will be full of engagements to allow The Duke and Duchess to see as many aspects of New Zealand culture as possible. They will firstly lay of a wreath to honour the men and women who have perished whilst serving the people of New Zealand at a memorial in the town of Blenheim. William and Catherine will then have a personal tour of the ‘Knights of  The Sky’ exhibition at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre by The Hobbit Director, Sir Peter Jackson.

The Duke and Duchess will then return to Wellington to meet the Prime Minister, John Key, and Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition in New Zealand, David Cunliffe. They will then return to Government House for a State Reception given by the Governor-General, where Prince William will give a short speech and unveil a new portrait of Her Majesty The Queen.
