The Duke of Cambridge talks football on Twitter

It’s gone football crazy over at Kensington Palace. The Duke of Cambridge, President of the Football Association, has just helped reveal the England squad for one of this summer’s biggest competitions. And hours earlier he caught Liverpool mania as he sent a personal tweet of congratulations to the Reds following one of their most famous wins ever.

On Wednesday morning, the Duke of Cambridge announced that Steph Houghton would be on the plane taking England’s Women to the World Cup being played in France this summer. In a video message he described her as the team’s ‘defensive rock’. William went on to look forward to the competition, saying he knew the team would do England proud. In the hours afterwards, big names including James Corden, Ellie Goulding and Emma Watson took to Twitter to reveal other top players in the women’s squad.

The previous night he had sent a personal message to Liverpool FC as they made the final of the Champions’ League in dramatic style. As the Reds overturned a three goal deficit to storm into the final of arguably the biggest cup competition in Europe, William sent a personal tweet to congratulate them. The second in line to the throne wrote ‘‘Well done Liverpool – an incredible result, what a comeback! W” – that personal touch indicating that this particular tweet came straight from the royal phone itself.

And the Duke of Cambridge might be sending another personal tweet soon as Tottenham Hotspur compete in the other semi final with only Ajax standing between them and a clash with their Premiership rivals, Liverpool, in the Champions’ League final which will be played on June 1st in Madrid.

Prince William is President of the Football Association and regularly attends big events in the sport. He missed last year’s FA Cup Final when it clashed with his brother’s wedding and he might have to take a swerve again this year as Lady Gabriella Windsor is marrying Thomas Kingston at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 18th, the day that Manchester City take on Watford for the most famous trophy in English football.
