The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to attend mental health summit

It’s no secret that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are huge advocates of raising awareness for mental health conditions.

Having shown public support for charities such as Mind, the royal couple champion the effort needed to remove the stigma around mental health.

And it has now been announced that they are to attend the first Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit on Tuesday October 9th in London.

The two-day summit, also taking place on October 10th, will be hosted by both the UK Government and the OECD.

The aim of the summit is to unite political figures, leading academics and policy-makers from around the globe, who all share the common goal of having better mental health for all.

The event will encourage countries to work alongside each other in order to approach the stigma around mental health as one unified force.

Around 450 million people currently live with a diagnosed mental health condition and across the globe, around one in four people will experience some kind of mental health-related problem in their lifetime.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been invited to attend a workstream on ‘Children, Young People and the Next Generation’ where they will learn about two case studies of active mental health programmes taking place in Slovenia and the USA.

They will also meet representatives from a number of organisations to hear more about ongoing mental health campaigns, along with viewing the work of Colombian contemporary fine-artist, Dairo Vargas.

He is to paint an original work of art inspired by the day’s events at the summit, as it takes place.

Finally, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit a Friendship Bench, which is part of the Zimbabwean programme teaching elderly women the skills to become city lay health workers.

The event promises to be another great step forward in the initiative to combat the stigma around mental health.
