The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to attend London Marathon for #HeadsTogether

Kensington Palace have announced that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will be attending the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 23 April in support of their Heads Together campaign.

Heads Together is the marathon’s 2017 Charity of the Year and more than 700 Heads Together runners will be participating in this year’s marathon to raise money and awareness of the need to change the national conversation on mental health.

To help make this year’s marathon a ‘mental health marathon’, each of the more than 39,000 runners will receive a Heads Together blue headband which they can choose to wear during the race alongside their own charity gear.

Prior to the start of the race, their Royal Highnesses will meet with a number of the Heads Together runners and once the race has begun they will watch the race and cheer on the runners from multiple points along the 26.2 mile route.

Prince Harry and the Duke and Duchess will also be on hand to pass out medals to runners as they cross the finish line on The Mall. In his role as Patron of the London Marathon Charitable Trust Prince Harry will perform the official medal presentations to the winners of the elite women, men and wheelchair races.

Their Royal Highnesses have spearheaded the Heads Together campaign in order to build on work already being done across the country to destigmatise mental health issues so that people can feel comfortable seeking support from family and friends during difficult times and are able to feel comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing.

Heads Together works in partnership with eight leading mental health charities and highlights the power of open and honest conversation can be life changing raising awareness, tackling stigma and allowing people to be able to talk openly about mental health challenges.

The royals attendance at the marathon will be part of a number of engagements to support Heads Together in the lead-up to the event. These include:

  • An event at Kensington Palace for Heads Together runners hosted by the Duchess of Cambridge
  • A visit by Prince Harry to the London Marathon expo
  • The attendance of the Duke of Cambridge at a screening of the BBC’s ‘Mind Over Marathon’ documentary which features members of Heads Together marathon team
  • A joint event for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to officially open The Global Academy
