As Prince William touched down in Canada yesterday with his family, he made it clear that he wants to meet as many Canadians as possible and give his children a chance to make ”lifetime friendships.”
And, as the media attention and massive public turnout suggest, it seems Canadians are equally excited about the royal visit. Polls reveal that the younger generation of the royal family are the most popular, with Prince William ranking as its most admired member.
A survey of 1,326 adults conducted by Forum Research Inc. in Canada shows the Duke of Cambridge as the favourite choice with 25 percent of the vote. His wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, comes second with 20 percent, while Prince Harry ranks third with 13 percent.
In the same research, nearly 38 percent (four in ten people) thought William was the best choice to be Canada’s next King and Head of State, while the current heir apparent, Prince Charles, and the fifth to the throne, Prince Harry, received the support of 11 percent each.
The poll doesn’t include Her Majesty The Queen but shows that 24 percent of Canadians have changed their views of the royals for the better.
Forum Research President Lorne Bozinoff said, ‘’Canada loves its Royal Family, despite the republican grumblings of a slight minority.
‘’It seems clear that the appearance of Prince William and his glamorous wife on the scene.. galvanised popular interest in the succession again.’’
One third of those surveyed said they would follow the royal visit closely, with up to ten percent adding they will follow the trip very closely.
Canadians have consistently shown their support for the monarchy across polls and debates. A poll conducted by Nanos Research in May found that nearly 70 percent of Canadians support the country’s ties to the monarchy and the Queen of Canada.
The visit is the Cambridge’s second tour of Canada, and the first with their two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The couple previously visited the country after their wedding in 2011.
