MP for Kensington takes aim at Prince George and his £150 jumpers

The Member of Parliament for Kensington, Emma Dent Coad, has reportedly targeted four-year-old Prince George during the Labour Party Conference.

According to the Sunday Express, Ms Dent Coad said: “When Prince George goes to school, they [the media] look at his jumpers and, you know, £150 for a jumper, that’s a food bill for a family of four for a lot of people, and that’s outrageous, and people are outraged by that.”

Also speaking at the same anti-monarchy event, another panellist, councillor Ken Ritchie, said: “We had all the media attention recently when Prince George started school. We don’t know if he will grow up to be as bad as his grandfather or maybe his great-grandfather. Or that he will be as bland as his father.

“All we know is that at some stage George will be King unless we change the system or unless he has an unfortunate illness or accident.”

Emma Dent Coad, who was elected to represent Kensington at the 2017 General Election, has been the subject of great criticism over the past week following comments she has made about The Royal Family.

Ms Dent Coad told a group of activists that Prince Harry couldn’t actually fly a helicopter and “just sits there going ‘vroom vroom.’”

She also described herself as ‘The Royal Family’s worst nightmare’ and made claims about Prince Harry, the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Following the criticism, the 62-year-old released a statement in which she said that she ‘made a joke’, and her comments ‘were taken the wrong way.’

In the statement, the MP drew comparisons between The Royal Family, many of whom reside in Kensington, and those who lived in the Grenfell Tower before the devastating fire.

She said: “The government has recently found £3bn to restore Buckingham Palace, a palace with 52 Royal and guest bedrooms and over 188 staff bedrooms. It is lived in by just three members of the Royal Family. In addition, the government finds £3bn a year to support the Royal Family, including millions to refurbish apartments for their use in Kensington Palace.

“Meanwhile, a short walk away, survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire have been abandoned in pokey hotel rooms for 15 weeks because there are no homes available for them.”

She adds: “Many of them are refugees, and some are former soldiers. I have total respect for them and the sacrifices they have made for their home countries and for ours. Army veterans are treated very poorly by the government; a close associate served in Iraq and Afghanistan and returned suffering from shock and PTSD. It took years to get a diagnosis, the system is punitive and he suffered unimaginably.

“On Monday night I made a joke. It has been taken the wrong way. Can we look at the real issues facing us now?”
