Kate attends event at The Fostering Network

The Duchess of Cambridge undertook her second engagement in two days on Friday 16th January when she attended an event organised by The Fostering Network in Islington. The Fostering Network is based at Islington Council Offices in North London.

Upon Kate’s arrival to the event she was greeted by foster mothers and fathers and proceeded to tell the gathered guests, “I’ve heard a huge amount about fostering, its really great for me to have an opportunity to speak to you.” Kate not only enjoyed the company of the guests, she also

relished in some very sweet treats while she sat next to some very energetic youngsters.

On Thursday 15th January, The Duchess of Cambridge paid a visit to Barlby Primary School to officially name its new art centre. The Duchess was visiting the art centre in her role as Patron of The Art Room, a charity that provides art therapy for underprivileged children and whilst the centre has been open since last autumn, it was yet to be named until Kate’s visit.

The Fostering Network describe themselves as ‘a powerful catalyst for change’ and they have been leading the fostering agenda for more than 40 years. The Fostering Network states that ore than 63,000 children live with 52,500 foster families across the United Kingdom and these children have more than likely experienced neglect and abuse or witnessed domestic abuse in their lifetime.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson explained Kate’s interest in the organisation, “These children have often experienced neglect and abuse, or have witnessed domestic violence or substance misuse. Whatever their experiences, all of them will be suffering the trauma of being separated from their own families, and need love, support and stability. Foster carers can provide these children with what they need, and often give them their first experience of family life. This event will help to shine a spotlight on fostering and raise awareness about the role of foster carers.”

The visit to The Fostering Network event was Kate’s second engagement of 2015. The Duchess of Cambridge is six months pregnant with her second child.
